Following two tough losses away to Aloha and then South Eugene, the Lady Vikings varsity team bounced back with a hard-fought 1-1 draw and outstanding team effort against the Woodburn Bulldogs at the North Salem High School stadium (Littlejohn Field) last Thursday.
The first half began with both teams playing tentatively as neither wanted to give up an early goal. However, the Lady Viks found their footing and began pushing forward with their efforts resulting in a close-range goal from junior Carrie Ochoa, assisted by a cross from freshman Valentina Santos.
Woodburn struck back quickly as they worked the ball into the Viks’ eighteen yard box, and were awarded a penalty kick for a foul in the box away from the play. After tying the score the Bulldogs soon had their post hit by a snapshot header from freshman Melissa Salgado.
An altercation on the field near an assistant referee saw a player from each team red carded, putting both sides at 10 players for the rest of the match.
Woodburn then sprung on the counterattack after a saved North free kick which led to the Bulldogs breaking through the Vikings defense, only to be denied by a superb save from junior goalkeeper Monce Barajas as she rushed off her line.
In a lively second half each team threatened the other’s goal, with strong defending and goalkeeping from both keeping the score even. As the teams tired they gave up chances late, with the Lady Vikings looking more likely to score owing to a resilient defense anchored by junior captain Amy DuVall. The game would finish 1-1.
